Elevated-slab shoring design and inspection

When structural engineering projects involve new concrete slabs, Studio A provides elevated-slab shoring design and inspection. Temporary supports, called shores and reshores, hold formwork and freshly placed concrete slabs until the concrete gains strength. Plans show the layout for those supports for the contractor to follow.

Threshold building special inspections

Some structural engineering projects involve threshold buildings as defined in Florida Building Code, Building, section 110.8. In general, that means buildings taller than three stories or 50 feet, or assembly occupancies over 5,000 square feet or 500 occupants. Threshold inspection covers structural components during construction.

Threshold inspections must be done by a Florida licensed engineer or architect who holds Special Inspector certification, engaged by the owner, not the contractor. Concrete restoration engineering

Concrete restoration engineering provides engineering and repair design for deteriorated concrete. Studio A prepares repair plans that define the work for the contractor to build. These jobs address observed conditions without performing the construction work.

Concrete restoration work often connects to milestone and SIRS related engineering, where an association needs documented findings before repairs are priced.

What threshold inspection means for structural engineering projects in South Florida

For structural engineering projects that meet the threshold definition, state rules add a layer of inspection during construction. Under Florida Building Code, Building, section 110.8 and section 553.79 of the Florida Statutes, a threshold building is generally one taller than three stories or 50 feet. It also includes assembly occupancies over 5,000 square feet or with 500 occupants.

Threshold inspection covers structural components during construction. It must be performed by a Florida licensed engineer or architect who holds Special Inspector certification. That inspector is engaged by the owner, not the contractor.

You can verify a license through the Florida Board of Professional Engineers and myfloridalicense.com. These structural engineering projects require an independent inspector to document compliance at the stages the code requires.

Binding Interpretation 318, issued 26 January 2026, addressed window and door replacement in threshold buildings. It stated that such replacement requires threshold inspection. DS 2026-024 and DS 2026-025 later narrowed that reading.

• Inspection is required when work enlarges or moves openings.
• Inspection is required when work cuts or alters framing.
• Inspection is required when work modifies concrete or masonry around openings, or changes load paths.
• Like-for-like replacement of equivalent products in the same rough openings, with no structural members modified, is exempt.

Not every window job triggers this rule, so the scope must be checked before work starts. If openings stay the same and no framing or surrounding structure is altered, the exemption may apply. When structural changes are planned, the threshold inspector must be engaged to cover the work. Early review helps set the inspection plan.

Each of these structural engineering projects starts with a review of scope and available documents. Studio A confirms what structure is involved and what service is requested. That review defines whether the job needs design, inspection, or both.

For design work, the office prepares plans or repair documents tied to structural engineering services. Drawings note the conditions and details the contractor must follow. For inspection work, visits occur at the stages the code requires.

Structural engineering projects move through site checks and written records as work proceeds. Inspectors compare field conditions with the approved plan and note corrections. The written report goes to the party who engaged the office for the job.

When threshold inspection applies, the inspector is engaged by the owner and remains separate from the contractor. Shoring and formwork are checked against the plan before concrete is placed.
